Myeongdong, Namsan, and Shopping

Myeongdong (명동) is a popular area in Seoul on the north side of the Han River. There are a number of great little cafes, plenty of street vendors selling everything from food to clothing, and a lot of shops down the side streets. Namsan (남산) Tower is also in this area. There are some nice hiking trails or a cable car that a visitor can take up to viewing points.

The traveler can also take a little stroll toward Myeongdong Cathedral. Even with all the tourists lining up to take pictures, it is a haven in the middle of the bustling city. When you first walk up, there are information packets available in English, Chinese, Japanese, and, of course, Korean. At the top of a small rise, there are a few prayer gardens around the cathedral, surrounded by greenery.

If you do go inside for Mass, be prepared for a tight squeeze as it is a popular place of worship; however, it is definitely worth it. The building is just as beautiful inside as it is out with gorgeously designed stained-glass windows and vaulted ceiling. Whether you sit for Mass or just take a few photos outside, I recommend Myeongdong Cathedral as a stopover point in your journey to Seoul.

Once you have finished sightseeing at Namsan and Myeongdong Cathedral, make your way back down to the shops for some street food or head over to one of the many cafes for a cup of tea.
